This is the flag of the Union of Aligned Worlds, also known as the Alignment, the principal non-Alliance power - and the Alliance's main antagonist.
As ever, I do welcome your feedback, both on the flag and the backstory.
Background:
Situated squarely in the middle of the Armward Reach, the Union of Aligned Worlds was born of a decade of resentment of the United Earth Alliance's high-handed approach to the Armward colonies following its victory over the Armward Federation in the Second Inter-Solar War. Comprised of colonies which by then were notoriously un-governable from Old Earth, the Alignment movement focused on Olympus, the largest colony in the Algolid, Liberty, ArmFed's erstwhile capital, and Jericho, a formerly-neutral world resentful of Alliance dominance post-war.
The final catalyst for the Union was the secession of the League of Seven Suns from Alliance control in 429 ADH. Chronic terrorism, insurgency and political inaction led to a popular uprising against an incompetent Alliance-friendly government. The Seven Suns' eight worlds - Samarkand, Denali, Laayoune, Meridian, Santiago, Sierra Azura and Whitefall, followed the lead of dominant Miranda and declared their independence from outside control. A fleet dispatched by the United Earth Navy under the command of Grand Admiral Tobias Calnen, the famous hero of the Second Inter-Solar War, failed utterly. Calnen became paranoid, his involvement with pro-Alliance terrorists became public, his culpability for crimes against humanity beyond doubt. Astoundingly, he was able to inspire the mutiny of his flagship, the battleliner ENS Shasta. Pursued and apprehended by his right-hand man and long-term friend, Vice-Admiral Aryon Trealor, Calnen committed suicide, Shasta was destroyed in combat, and Trealor himself was killed when his own flagship, the battleliner Denali was ambushed and destroyed by Seven Suns separatists determined to avenge Calnen's vicious and unnecessary bombardment of Miranda.
The ensuing scandal collapsed the United Earth Parliament, leading to the impeachment and arrest of Alliance Secretary-General Isolde Croft, and constituted the greatest earthquake in Diasporal history. Riding a wave of pure outrage, and wary of what the Alliance would do next, the Seven Suns and Armward colonies declared the 'Alignment' of their interests, founding a new political bloc so that never again would Old Earth's corruption and imperialism weigh down the Armward Reach.
In the twenty years since, the UAW has become a popular counterweight to the sheer vastness of the United Earth Alliance. Even so, at best, the Alignment is half the Alliance's size, even following its bolstering by the accession of the Coalition of People's Planetary Republics. The presence of the CPPR within its ranks has presented an uncomfortable dilemma for the Alignment as a whole, as the more liberal Armward members attempt to accommodate the avowed - and radical - Purism of the Alignment's Windward member. Even so, the UAW and UEA now exist in an uneasy balance, for the time being. True peace was arranged via the signing of the Virgin Systems Treaty, which called for the clearance of minor hardscrabble colonies along the Armward Fringe to create a de-colonised buffer zone between the two superpowers. Whether that peace holds remains to be seen.
