Flight Lieutenant Narendra Sharman leant listlessly on the handrail of Centre Table. The main tactical plot hologram hung beautifully – monotonously – above it. The swirling representation of Hood’s sensor sweeps was hypnotic, but it showed precisely nothing.

That was not technically accurate – it actually showed quite a lot, just nothing interesting. Only a refuelling station with some civilian habitats, a few civvie ships, and the rest of Hood’s Strike Group at anchor, orbiting with it.

"Astro, commence turnover." Merani's voice was mild as he spoke into the calmness.

"Aye, Commodore. Helm, bring us to true heading two-eight-one by oh-nine-three; bow negative one-eight-zero, stern positive one-eight-zero. Execute."

The helmsman was already moving. "Aye-aye, Sir. Turnover underway."

Merani Ardalan frowned slightly as the stars in the Main Field swung ponderously around. Through his chair, Merani felt the manoeuvring thrusters of the Armward Federation Starship Mile Haven kick off and flip the starship-of-war end for end.

U.E. Armed Services - Emblemsby ~Leovinas

Here are the service emblems for the two armed services of the United Earth Alliance in my sci-fi.

The idea is that the United Earth Navy is the space force, and the United Earth Legion is the marine/paratroop/army force.

For those of you without Latin, the service mottos are as follows:
Navy: Domini Caeli Victi = Masters of the conquered sky
Legion: Per Caelum Per Terram = By sky and by land

I tried to go for a basic yet distinct feel for each, both clearly derived from the Alliance emblem.

Yes, there is. Beyond just differentiating the two insignia, they represent the 'direction' each service attacks in, in the sense that the Navy has an orbit-to-surface role (i.e. can among other things, bombard planets), whereas the Legion has a surface-to-orbit role (i.e. can among other things, defend a planet's orbital space).
