Sci-Fi: Jovian League Flag

Description

Update, 01/08/2014: There is now a new version of this flag, here.  Let me know what you think!

This is the flag of the Jovian League, a historical power from the backstory of my sci-fi, the Diaspora Series. The League was defeated in a titanic war early in the history of the United Earth Alliance.

The flag was done in Photoshop with a variety of inspriations. I wanted something authoritarian.

Backstory:
The Jovian League was the first major interstellar power to come into being by violent revolution. The riots that saw its ultimate creation developed into a full-blown rebellion that seized the entire Jovian System and repelled the Alliance's expeditionary force, creating a new power completely divorced from Old Earth.

With an economy strong from the natural resources of Jupiter System, dominance of the asteroids of the Inner Rim and with lucrative jump links outsystem, the League existed in total opposition to the Alliance.

As a side-effect of its fierce opposition to Old Earth and all it stood for, the League became increasingly purist in outlook, banning gengineering and pregen and even deporting or sterilising 'dangerous' individuals.

The League's expansion was at the expense of the Alliance; the inevitable Jovian War came when a veritable split occurred between purist and transhumanist groups within the Alliance itself, causing the secession of a handful of countries and civil war in four of the Alliance's constituent superpowers.

The five-year long Jovian War was the last conflict to be almost entirely fought within Sol System. The war raged across Sol's entirety, with Allied forces initially blockaded around Old Earth and forced back to Neptune, only to counter-attack and push the Jovians back to Callisto, where the League was ultimately defeated.

Many major tenets of space warfare were developed during the Jovian War, which saw countless acts of heroism and cowardice played out in dozens of iconic battles.

Perhaps the most famous combatant of the Jovian War was Robert Bradshaw, the Luna-born commander of the spacecraft carrier ENS Juno. Bradshaw developed many of the main traditions and features of the United Earth Navy, and was the first to advocate its expansion from a peacekeeping force to the full-blown navy it remains today.

Another exceptionally-famous wartime commander was Dame Helena Radwinter, who spent much of the war commanding the British-funded Consortium cruisers CCS Temeraire and CCS Defiance. Widely regarded as the Founding Mother of the modern Consortium navy, and in particular of Atlantaea's Royal Space Navy, Radwinter developed imaginative and radical tactics during the war.

Other prominent commanders come to mind from the war, such as Commander Joseph Keel of the cruiser USS Californa, Commander Teyashi Soba of the spacecraft carrier CCS Akagi, Commander Jiangma Hu of the carrier GLS Qin Shi Huang, Commander Radovan Tsarevitch of the cruiser JS Gondul and Capitaine d'Escadre Julien Savignac of the carrier CCS Arc-en-Ciel.

The Jovian War was the first time the Alliance became involved in an all-out conflict with a competing power; it was not for another 150 years that it would happen again, by which time the Alliance had evolved almost beyond recognition.
