This is a rank chart showing the insignia for all the ranks used by the United Earth Navy in my sci-fi.
In-Universe:
The UEN is the spaceborne military arm of the United Earth Alliance; it operates alongside the United Earth Legion, which is the Alliance's planetside military arm.
The starship commander ranks are not, technically speaking, separate ranks; however, starship commanders have unique insignia (the diagonal red-white-red commander's flash), have white in their uniforms, and are addressed as 'Commander'; officers of the same rank who are not starship commanders have all-black uniforms, no flash, and are addressed as 'Vice-Commander'.
The title 'Captain' is only ever applied to people in command of civilian vessels; 'Commander' is only ever applied to those in charge of military vessels, hence why the UEN does not use the rank of Captain.
